THE PREEKSTOEL GHOST

9-11 July 2014, The West Coast National Park, Langebaan, South Africa.

In June 2014 we visited South Africa and one of my favourite places on earth:  The West Coast National Park.  The park is a haven for nature lovers, hikers and bird lovers and an absolute jewel in the West Coast of South Africa.  The best time to go is over October when the flowers are in bloom and this is truly one of the things that everyone should see at least once in their lives (like the Northern Lights).  It is my solitary space, the place I love most and I believe that this, small peninsula around the lagoon, has some serious magical powers.

During our visit I collaborated with my husband on a couple of self-portraits and started developing a fictional story of a (yet another) ghost, named Eva.  Below is a small description and some photographic illustrations of my vision for this fictional character.

On the edge of the Langebaan Lagoon (In the West Coast National Park, South Africa), hidden among the species of rare fynbos (tiny species of flowers) and the white, sandy beaches, lies Preekstoel (a rock formation in a small bay named Kraalbay) where, it is believed, that the spirit of a woman called Eva De Flacourt still remains today.

Legend has it, that she appears among the tiny, delicate flowers, the vast beaches and the ancient rock formations, around the mythical and mysterious lagoon.  She can be seen especially during the flower season in October, when all the fynbos species are in bloom and some believe that Eva’s spirit is pinned to Preekstoel, between the rock formations. Many also believe that her ancestors are from a native Khoi woman and Étienne De Flacourt (the Director General of the French East India Company) who first translated the Khoi Language in 1648 but returned to France in 1655.

De Flacourt was an observant man, fascinated by the unusual Western Cape landscape and its various cultures.  He regularly travelled to Madagascar where he wrote Histoire de la Grande Isle Madagascar (1st edition 1658, 2nd edition 1661) and on his way there, he docked in the region for supplies and research and fell in love with an unknown Khoi woman.  Some say Eva only appears to those who are able to predict the future and a sighting of her, will bring you luck and prosperity.
